New Yorkers with disabilities can now get discounts on their Internet access. A new program created by Congress makes this possible across the country.

What is the new program?

The Affordable Connectivity Program was created as a way to benefit people with disabilities who are on Supplemental Security Income. People can qualify for a discount of $50 per month on their Internet service. The program comes on the heels of the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program, which was in place to help people by giving them a temporary discount on their Internet access.

The program, which is worth $14 billion, can help those with limited financial resources so they can access the Internet for all their personal, work, school and healthcare-related needs.

What are the eligibility criteria for the program?

In addition to being a recipient of SSI and having a disability, there are other criteria you must meet to be eligible for the program. Your total household income must be at or under 200% of the federal poverty level. You could also qualify if you’re on other types of public assistance besides SSI.

How can you register for your discount?

If you are on SSI and want to get a discount on your Internet service, you will have to provide proof of your SSI eligibility. You will have to go to www.usac.org to register.

After you have registered for the program, contact your cellphone, cable company, Internet or other providers to get your discount. You may also be able to qualify for a permanent discount when you receive SSI.

This program could be a lifeline for many people. If you have a disability and are on SSI, you might want to take advantage of the discount.
