Can I Get a Stimulus Check If I’m Collecting Disability Benefits?

Can I Get a Stimulus Check If I’m Collecting Disability Benefits?

The IRS is providing most adults in the United States with $1,200 stimulus payments, following Congress’s passage of the CARES Act (the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act). This includes people who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits.

How Do I Get My Stimulus Money?

If you are an SSDI recipient, you don’t need to do anything to get your money. The government has your contact information, and will send you your money automatically. You should receive your stimulus money the same way you receive your SSDI benefits.

Will The Stimulus Money Impact My SSDI Benefit Eligibility?

No. SSDI eligibility is not income or asset dependent, so your eligibility for SSDI will not be impacted by your stimulus money. The CARES Act is intended to boost Americans in this time of crisis, and accepting your check will only benefit you.

It Is Possible You Will Receive More Or Less Than $1200

If you have dependent children under the age of 17, who live with you for more than half of the year, you will receive an extra $500 for each of those children.

If you receive income in addition to your SSDI benefits that adds up to more than $75,000, your stimulus payment will be reduced. If you and your spouse file a joint return and your combined income is over $150,000, your stimulus payment will be reduced.

In order to determine if your stimulus payment should be adjusted either up or down, the IRS will look at your “adjusted gross income” on your most recent tax return. If you filed your 2019 return already, the IRS will look at it. If you have not yet filed for 2019, the IRS will look at your 2018 return.
